DESIGN OF A SCHOOLYARD WITH FRESHNESS ISLANDS
Production, Installation
Urban cooling is a concern for cities and municipalities. It is also a concern for school principals who take into account the well-being of their students and therefore aspire to relandscape their schoolyard by integrating vegetation.
It is well known that plants increase the humidity level and thus reduce the feeling of heat in a mineralised environment. In addition, it contributes to the gathering of people and therefore to the development of social links.
For this project, ATECH carried out the outdoor layout of the schoolyard of Louis-le-Grand high school in Paris, in the 5th arrondissement.
The aim was to organize the space while planting or developing the existing nature. Urban gardens, in other words planters with seats, were installed. Then, planters with seats were also created around the trees to protect them. Finally, tables with standing seats were placed in a quieter area for reading, snacking or simply sharing among students.
This arrangement includes various bespoke planting furniture in painted steel and Robinia. The wooden slats have been stained to protect them. This technique is also a design one as it brings out the grain.
Greening this mineralized space will thus encourage moments of sharing between students, by allowing them to take advantage of shaded areas during hot weather.
